The First International Symposium on Edible Plant Resources and the Bioactive Ingredients

Editor: | Jun 27,2008

The strategy for disease control and preventive medicine has earned increasing attention and is under rapid progress. Preventive medicine in the 21st century is rooted in and developed from the healthcare works of the 20th century, emphasizing on the prevention of chronic diseases. Thus, the measures taken are turned from killing the pathogens to intervening in the pathologic process. A number of edible plants and their active ingredients have been proven to be appropriate for these purposes, because of their high safety, universal acceptability, low cost and accessibility for long-term consumption.

Research and application of edible plants and its bioactive ingredients for disease prevention created opportunity for the upgrading of modern agriculture, food processing and drug manufacture. Through the unique geographic position, ecoenvironment and climate, a great variety of species of edible plants have been grown in Xinjiang for hundreds of years. Xinjiang’s medicinal herbs have been used and studied for a long time in Uyghur medicine. The theory and experience of clinical practice of Uyghur medicine have paved the way for the future development of alternative medicine, which might become a prominent trend of medicine in Xinjiang and Central Asia.

The goal of the First International Symposium on Edible Plant Resources and the Bioactive Ingredients (ISEPR2008) is to provide an opportunity to exchange the achievements in the studies on plantation, bioactivity and medical application of edible plants and phytochemicals, and to discuss the hot topics and the core problems in the relevant fields and foresee the prospect in basic research and technology. The latest developments in this field both at home and abroad are expected to promote scientific exchange, cooperation and communication among the scientists around the world.
