The Xinjiang Technical Institute of Physics & Chemistry (XTIPC) was founded in 2002 upon the merger of the former Xinjiang Institute of Physics and the Xinjiang Institute of Chemistry. In the same year, XTIPC was also selected for the CAS Knowledge Innovation Program.

The institute conducts basic and applied research in the fields of physics, chemistry, environmental engineering and information technology with the aim of developing innovations that meet national and regional strategic needs. It is also engaged in early stage work related to commercializing promising technologies. The institute cooperates with local government agencies and enterprises with the goal of making a substantial contribution to the social and economic development of Xinjiang and the nation. It also aims to become an influential research institute in western China as well as in Central Asia.

XTIPC’s key research areas include material physics and chemistry, plant resources chemistry, multilingual information technology, and environmental science and technology. It also carries out research in the areas of optical functional materials and devices, radiation physics and special sensitive materials, etc.

The institute is home to the CAS Key Laboratory of Plant Resources and Chemistry of Arid Zones, the CAS Key Laboratory of Functional Materials and Devices for Special Environments, the State Key Laboratory for Xinjiang Indigenous Medicinal Plant Resource UtilizationXinjiang Key Laboratory of Electronic Information Materials and Devices and Xinjiang Laboratory of Minority Speech and Language Information Processing.

As of the end of 2016, XTIPC had more than 300 staff members, including 44 full professors or the equivalent and more than 80 associate professors. The institute offers Ph.D. and master’s degree programs in the fields of physical chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, microelectronics and solid electronics, computer application technology, material physics and chemistry, and physical electronics, as well as master’s degree programs in medicinal chemistry, materials engineering and computer technology. It also offers chemistry and electronic science and technology programs for postdoctoral researchers. In 2016, the institute had 157 doctoral candidates, 133 master’s students, 29 postdoctoral researchers and 25 international students.   .

In 2016, XTIPC has applied for 102 Chinese invention patents and two International invention patents. In the same period, it has been granted 53 invention patents. Institute researchers have published over 173 papers, including 139 SCI papers.

XTIPC has established cooperative relationships with more than 20 countries and regions, under the strategy “Rooted in Xinjiang, Facing Central Asia.” In accordance with CAS’s “go global” strategy, XTIPC plans to set up the CAS Central Asian Drug Discovery and Development Center in Uzbekistan in cooperation with other CAS institutes. In 2016, 55 XTIPC personnel made international visits and 55 international researchers visited the institute.

The Physics Society, Chemistry Society, Automation Society, Physiological Science Society and Nuclear Society of Xinjiang are all also affiliated with the institute.
