Bismuth oxychloride is a new type of high-grade green pearlescent material, with non-toxic, low-oil absorption. It has a unique surface adhesion characteristics and smoothness, and it can be widely used in cosmetic composition, plastics industry. Bismuth oxychloride pigments can also be used in automobile decoration material, electronic equipment (such as mobile phones, computers), sporting goods, printing ink, clothing accessories. At present, the common synthesis method of bismuth oxychloride is to make bismuth chloride hydrolyzed at the room temperature, but it needs to control the pH value of the reaction system, and the solution needs to be heated to a certain temperature, the process control is complex. Therefore, it is a challenge faced by the chemical industry to develop an easy mass production, green pollution-free method for the preparation of bismuth oxychloride.

Prof. XU Jinbao and his research team from Xinjiang Technical Institute of Physics & Chemistry,CAS, had prepared bismuth oxychloride by solid state reaction at room temperature. Bismuth salt and sodium chloride were used as raw material, which were firstly grinded at room temperature, then washed by DI water to remove soluble byproducts. After drying, the product of bismuth oxychloride was obtained. The process is featured of simple technology, efficiency, low cost, and easy to amplify. Besides, it also has many advantages such as acid and alkali and the organic additives without being used in the whole process, no need to heat, energy saving and green non-polluting. Bismuth oxychloride obtained by the method has a wide market because it can be used in coatings, inorganic pigments, high quality cosmetics and pearlescent accessories.

The research has been authorized by the national invention patent on 30th May,2012. (Patent No. :ZL201010586905.3).
