On September 19, Crystal Science, an English academic journal sponsored by the Xinjiang Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry (XTIPC), officially debuted, with its first editorial board working meeting successfully held online. Academicians, renowned experts and scholars, as well as journal editorial board members from the crystal science community at home and abroad gathered online to witness the journal’s maiden voyage. Yun Zhang, Deputy Director-General of the Bureau of Science and Technology Infrastructure of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), attended the meeting and delivered an address.

Supervised by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, sponsored by XTIPC, published by Science Press, and co-organized by Nanjing University, Shandong University and Tianjin University of Technology, Crystal Science was established to address the shortage of dedicated high-level academic journals for the crystalline materials field in China. The journal aims to build a full-chain academic exchange platform spanning computational crystal design, synthesis and crystal growth, and device applications, offering a high-quality venue for researchers worldwide in crystal science to publish their research findings.

The meeting was chaired by Researcher Shilie Pan, Director of XTIPC and Editor-in-Chief of the journal. Professor Kenneth R. Poeppelmeier, Co-Editor-in-Chief from Northwestern University, USA, and Yun Zhang, Deputy Director-General of the Bureau of Science and Technology Infrastructure of CAS, delivered remarks in sequence.

Professor Kenneth R. Poeppelmeier congratulated the official launch of Crystal Science. He noted that crystalline materials serve as an essential cornerstone for modern precision metrology, information technology, advanced optical instruments and quantum research, and form a strategic foundation for global high-end manufacturing and scientific advancement. XTIPC has dedicated decades to functional crystal research, laying solid academic groundwork for the founding of the journal. As Co-Editor-in-Chief, he will uphold the principle that science knows no borders. Taking the journal as a link, he will promote academic exchanges, research output sharing and talent collaboration between China and the United States in optoelectronic functional crystalline materials, and commit to building an open and inclusive international academic platform.

On behalf of the Bureau of Science and Technology Infrastructure of CAS, Deputy Director-General Yun Zhang congratulated the official launch of Crystal Science. He remarked that the establishment of the journal will further boost academic communication and lead innovative disciplinary development. He expressed hopes that all editorial board members will actively engage in journal development, contribute manuscripts, organize high-quality special issues, gather high-level original research results, and help the journal achieve a high starting point upon launch. Afterwards, Shilie Pan presented a special report to the editorial board covering the journal’s founding background, development orientation and future plans.

During the discussion session, editorial board experts conducted in-depth discussions on core topics including the journal’s strategic positioning, definition of disciplinary scope, column development, peer review system, editorial board team development, manuscript solicitation strategy for the inaugural issue, international development and publicity, and put forward a host of constructive suggestions.

At this new starting point following its launch, the journal targets becoming an internationally top-tier publication. It will continue to pool global intellectual resources, publish high-quality research with sound scientific merit, innovation and practical application value, actively advance scientific progress in relevant disciplines, and develop a global research exchange platform for crystal science.
